DEPARTURE  print this page

Today, we're ready to hit the road.

We've always travelled as a family and this will be our first trip with an extra crew member. For Gao, our Tswana cameraman, this is a first too. He's always dreamt of doing the real thing, travelling to explore interesting places and camping in the bush. I suspect he'll got more than what he bargained for...

As we didn't leave on Friday, nor on Saturday, my whole food and beverage plan falls apart. The lunch I had organised for the first leg of the trip was consumed at the house and so was the picnic. Also, the trip takes much longer than foreseen because of the unexpected great opportunities to film and photograph; like when we cross the swollen Matjiesriver with a 1-ton heavy trailer. Thank goodness the car and trailer are well-sealed! To cross deep water with a strong current is a scary experience, especially if you have two young children with you. It's already dark when we reach Heuningvlei. There is not a single light in the village and no stars or moon to guide us. "We're having a power failure due to yesterday's storm," Abram says. The children are tired and hungry, and so are we. It's really cold, raining again, the tap water in the guesthouse is ice-cold and we have just one candle and a half to brighten up our misery. These are moments when I ask myself why on earth I'm doing this to myself and my family.  It obviously takes longer than a day to get out of my comfort zone. After an unexpectedly tasty meal, cooked at the trailer under the rain, we go to bed. As we snuggle up under the warm duvet, we look out through the window and see a thousand stars appear from behind the clouds. And this is where the magic kicks in...
