CRAFTS – MAKE YOUR OWN HEMP PAPER

A great activity for a rainy day: making hemp paper

  • Fill a large plastic container with warm water
  • Trim and cut hemp stems into 1 cm pieces; place them in the container and allow to soak overnight to soften them
  • Boil the stems for 5 hours
  • When ready, use a sieve to remove the stems and put them in a blender
  • Add 2 cups of water (use the water you soaked the stems in)
  • Blend until you obtain a soft pulp
  • If the pulp is not soft yet, let it stand (covered) for another night
  • Place a towel or felt mat next to the plastic container
  • Pour the pulp into a plastic container
  • Press the deckle down until filled with pulp
  • Slowly lift the deckle straight up; the screen should be coverd with an even layer of pulp
  • Let the excess drip off
  • Flip the deckle with the paper side down onto the towel or mat, and lift the deckle so that the hemp rectangle stays behind
  • Sponge the rectangle very softly
  • Repeat until all pulp is used
  • Allow 12 for hemp paper rectangles to dry
  • To smoothen out the hemp paper, iron it using the highest setting on your iron
  • Your homemade hemp paper is now ready

    baboon matters [© 2008 PaulGodard.com]

I'm just about to relax into my Sunday afternoon when I look out through the back window and see movement on the mountain. There's definitely someone walking down towards the house. Is it a nature lover or a worker from a nearby building site checking out possible entries into my house? I soon realise it's a baboon and I notice that it's not alone...
