Ant's Bushveld Love Story
During one of our road trips for Kids of Nature, we had the unexpected pleasure of enjoying a sundowner with some very special rhino in the Waterberg, South Africa.
The sundowner preceded the arrival of a full moon which in rhino world is anything but romantic. The rhino may not be aware of the lurking danger, but for their protectors it is one of the most stressful times of the month. Ant Baber is one such protector. "A full moon makes it easy for poachers to move around the reserve at night to target our rhino, because the moon's light gives them good visibility," he explains. "This is the time when we are on high alert. In fact, the danger has escalated to the point where we need to keep our rhino close and bring in specialist armed security for additional protection. During full moon, I don't even leave the farm anymore," Ant says.
Ant Baber is one of the founders of the 'Save the Waterberg Rhino' Foundation.
