The Attic, The Road
Updated: Aug 22, 2019
As I was clearing the attic the other day, I started browsing through old school boxes. Turning the pages of our homeschooling adventure and the educational children’s books of Struik Nature Club reminded me of happy, easy times. I used to set-up class in remote spots in the wilderness during our frequent travels through South Africa and Namibia which, needless to say, I absolutely loved. But as family dynamics changed, so did my time schedule.
Homeschooling & travel as part of a full time job shifted from a context of dual parenting to one of single parenting. Having to do everything on my own, I’ve become eternally busy and it seems as if there aren’t enough hours in the day. I absolutely love homeschooling my children who are now 16 and 17, and I totally love the work I do for Kids of Nature. But, what I don’t like is that I no longer have enough free time – nor energy – to do fun things with my children the way I used to, or at least to get them to spend less time plugged in and more time outdoors. And what’s more, I also catch myself being plugged in more often than I know is good for me. So much for leading by example…
Luckily, all one needs every now and then is a little wake-up call and a reminder of how easily this can be fixed. By clearing the attic, I also cleared the fog in my mind. It’s time to unplug and hit the road. The dirt road, that is. Tomorrow, we'll be off on our next adventure, en route to one of my favourite parts of the country, the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. I am thrilled, and so are Enya and James. This time, they will not be studying, but actively reviewing all the experiences on offer, and this from a refreshing young perspective!
Follow-us behind the scenes during our road trip. Amber, who freshly arrived from Belgium to team up with Kids of Nature, will be joining us and post special moments and encounters on our Facebook page and on Instagram.
If you’re keen to unplug too and spend special time away in the wilderness, get in touch. We’d love to design and plan your next adventure!
